Child of Light - Done, and I'm actually bothering to write about it \0/

Late 2014 Ubisoft surprised everyone by bringing out a JRPG, build in the engine the Rayman games run on.

Surprisingly enough, it actually is an awesome game!

You play as Aurora, a young princess who went to sleep in Austria and woke up in the world of Lumeria. She just wants to go home, but in order to do so she has to save the Moon, Sun and the Starts, first!

Gameplay
Time flew by for me while playing this: Lumeria looks gorgeous, the music, art and characters kept me entertained throughout the whole time: I do love RPGS, but sometimes, even with a game I love, I catch myself getting a bit bored of all the running around, grinding, etc. etc.

Child of Light didn't do this to me, at all: In fact, I went out of my way to fly around, hoping to find some more hidden secrets.

Battlesystem
The battlesystem is turnbased and you can only use 2 partymembers at once, However, you're free to switch around as much as you want without any real penalties.

All in all, I still blow at writing reviews but I've had a LOT of fun with Child of Light; it's a great little gem of a game that won't give you a minute to feel bored.

It's relatively short (I finished it in around 10 hours) but that's fine, seeing the full price is around 15 euro's.

How to take off your mask (Visual novel) - Completed.

I needed a break from the extensive JRPG's, so figured I should take a look at some other games in my backlog with interesting sounding titles.
Somehow, 'How to take off your mask' grabbed my attention and thus I launched it.

What immediately struck me is how damned cute the game looks! The openingssong is quite catchy, and generally it left me feeling like I was living through an anime adventure.

Story
The story is quite original and intriguing, too: You're a girl who lives with her grandmom in the Bakery, and one day you wake up to find out you've grown a cats tail/ears overnight.
So, of course, you panick/freak out, escape your room... ...And run into the clumsy guy that you see sa a little brother, and suddenly isn't so clumpsy now.

So, a kind of doubleplay where he likes you as the cat-you, but sees you as his sister in the human-you, begins while also trying to figure out who wants to hurt the cats people.

All in all, it's a cute, fun, visual novel that's worth a look. :)

Plug and Play - finished.

This week I've been quite busy with the flu, getting lost in Tales of Zestiria (Which still ain't finished), etc.

Anyway, this afternoon I was waiting for someone and figured I could at least start one of the short games, according to howlongtobeat.com.

For some reason 'Plug and Play' has mystically appeared in my library... All I can say is, what the heck did I waste my life on?!?!

I guess it's just not for me, seeing how a lot of people do seem to be able to appreciate it, but really, what the heck..

I think I've spent around 10-15 minutes of my life by hooking up electricity cords with eachother, in varying suggestive positions.

This is an innocent example. I suppose if you like weird ass crap, have a weird sense of humor or just want to help hooking up electricity buds with eachother, go for it.

For me, it simply wasn't worth the 3-4 dollars which apparently is the full price.

Prague Legends and 'Her Story' completed this week.

So.... This week has been kind of slow, backlogcompletionwise anyways.

I did finish 'Her Story' around a week ago and 'Alchemy Mysteries: Prague Legends' (Or the other way around, I'm lazy and can't be bothered to look it up now :p).

Her Story
Well, I suppose it's more like a scrambled documentar/detective instead of an actual game, but it's Steam, so yes, I do count it! :p

You're watching old police tapes of a woman being interviewed about the murder of her husband. By searching/guessing keywords you'll find more video fragments... The goal is to figure out what 'Her story' is, which ain't as easy as it sounds.

The downside: I suppose I've uncovered the story. but because it's open ended and nothing really gets confirmed, it's still a guess to know if my version is close to the truth or a few millenia off.

All in all it's a fun, interesting, timekiller that's worth a try. :)

Alchemy Mysteries: Prague Legends.
Uuurgh, I REALLY didn't like this game, at all! In fact, I've come close to just abandoning and uninstalling it alltogether.

Why? It's a hidden object game, I know, but the amount of back/side tracking irritated me like hell:

For example, there's this hidden place in the wall in your bedroom, you uncover it, find the objects, and be done, you'd say.

Well, not really: Even though the times you look at it afterwards there's nothing to find, but then all of a sudden you need to somehow figure out you're supposed to look for something there (Whereas we already found the stuff there and couldn\t find anything more earlier) because, somehow, this keyitem you need in a completely different area of the game decided to appear there...

I guess the story could've been fun, but the sheer illogical backtracking made me lose my patience way to often, making it more a frustrating way to fill my time instead of being a game I actually liked playing.

Battleblock Theatre

Last night I, of well a friend and me, finished Battle Block theatre: story mode (Co-op.)

BattleBlock Theatre is a bright looking, challenging 2D platformer that doesn't take itself to serious.

Story:
You and your friends get stranded, and somehow you end up being imprisoned in a theatre by a bunch of cats.

The goal is to free Hatty Hattington by performing your way through the theatre.

The narrator with all of it's sarcastic comments and humor often cheered me up.

Gameplay
You can either play this solo or in co-op mode with up to 3 friends.

I did enjoy the solo mode, but seeing a friend gifted this to me so we could play together I've mostly played co-op with him, and I don't regret it at all: We had a blast!~

On normal modes you can activate checkpoints and have an infinite amount of lives... You can also push other people around, annoy them by trapping and, well, killing them.

Especially when you're also talking on teamspeak (For me the in-game voicechat had some kind of annoying echo) you sometimes can't stop laughing due to failing/seeing the other fail, push them off once they finally make it, etc. etc.

Seeing most levels don't have a time limit. and there's no game-offer, you don't have to feel guilty about it either: There's no consequence whatsoever, except that they have to run back from whatever the last safepoint was.

There are a LOT of ways to customise your character: With the gems you collect in the levels you can buy heads in a certain shape, though it's always a surprise how the head you get will look like.

You can also buy weapons: There's a firebolt that sets monsters, and friends, on fire. The downside is that they can spread the fire.

There's an iceblockcannon that, well, turns things into iceblocks.

My favourite weapon was a frog with a hat... That'd run around until he explodes.

Overall
An awesomely fun platformer with a perfect sense of humor you just have to give a try.

Wether you enjoy the story mode, or mess around in one of the other modes, you are almost guaranteed to have a good time!

Dragon Age: Origins - DONE \0/

Oh my god!! I'm not sure wether it's the new years resolution, trying to stick to this blog, really loving the story or whatever but...

I. HAVE. ACTUALLY. FINISHED. DRAGON AGE!!

Okay, so, ye, I'm quite happy now! I've actually sticked with a game for 30 hours!!

Story:
The start is different depending on your chosen class/race/background:

I went for an Elven Mage, Neria. As all the mages I started out in the Circle of Magi, around the time I got promoted to a 'real' mage by passing a test.

Due to some events I don't want to spoil, you end up as an initiate to the infamous Grey Warden:

They're a group of people determined to fight the Darkspawn (Think evil, demons, corrupted beings).
A blight (darkspawn woke up an 'arch demon' which leads them on an attack against, well, the whole world, really) has recently begun, and they need your help in beating them.

Grey Wardens used to be legendary, renown warriors, the protectors of the world but overtime they became forgotten seeing there hasn't been a blight in around 400 years.
Writing this down suddenly made me realise they're quite like the Night's Watch in 'a Game of Thrones'.

Some more events happen and amidst the blight a civil war starts to break out. It's your mission to remind the humans, dwarves and elves of the ancient treaties they signed ages ago and help you stop the blight, while stopping a civil war in the process.

You meet a lot of different, unique, characters throughout the story, you can choose to keep some as companions or just send them away/kill them. One thing I particularly like is all the idle chatter/banter between the characters. There's for example a dwarf that just kept hitting on this old mage.

By making certain choises in events/quests, talking to them or by giving your companions gift you increase how much they like you and, eventually, develop romantic relationships with some of them.

Gameplay
You can control 1 party member at any given time (But assign tactics to the others so the AI somewhat does what you want, if you're lucky) and play it like an action-rpg by using skills in real-time.

You can also choose to press space bar to pause the game, tell a character/characters who to attack, what skill to use, where to move, or what item to use and they will do so if you unpause the game again.

At the start I found this quite confusing/annoying, but especially the pause - think - react kinda started to grow on me.

You can move around in realtime both in- and out of battle by just clicking somewhere and the charater will move, or by using the WASD keys instead.

Camera
I've probably played to many games where I could adjust the angle better, but the camera annoyed me a great deal: Sometimes it seemed like my view was 'blocked' due to a building, or maybe I'm just to used to games where I can freely turn the camera around 360 degrees.

Pro's

  • Rich story and history
  • a lot of variation in characters, cultures, background
  • Being able to build relationships with your companions
  • An awful lot of way's to customize your characters (Classes have a lot of different talents/spells you can choose to unlock or not by spending points. Think about WoW's talent system, but more complex.)
  • Decisions you make actually have an impact on the gameworld, characters and events instead of being irrelevant in the big scheme of things.
Cons
  • Annoying camera
  • The AI sometimes seems to have a deathwish.
  • Somewhat outdated graphics - but hey! The game is from 2009!

All in all, an awesome RPG with a rich story, loads of ways to customise your characters, several possibly outcomings, a must play!

Though, I'd advice you to get the Ultimate Edition instead of the stand alone with a stand alone Awakenings (Bundles...) - I wish I'd've gotten the Ultimate instead of just Awakenings for all the extra dlc.

NotGTAV - Completed.

So, a while ago (And, okay, still am) I was to broke/greedy to buy GTA V so instead I've bought NotGTAV!

Story
There's none really, except that they really don't like David Cameron.
You are controlling a car/guy/whatever and have to run over/collect/ things A and B, while avoiding getting caught by C.

For example:
You are David Cameron and have to destroy all kinds of files while avoiding getting caught by the clerks.

Gameplay
It's well somewhat based on snake: Eat stuff while avoiding hitting the walls, yourself, or other stuff.

Graphics
Everything looks like it has been drawn by a kid. No, I'm not being overly critic here; look for yourself ;)

Pro's:

  • Cheap
  • Fun/parody
  • You support charity by buyng it.
  • The random comments are fun
Cons:
  • Low replay value
  • I suppose due to being non-Brittish myself some of the witty puns/jokes are lost on me.

Overall
One of those how-the-heck-did-it-end-up-in-my-library?! games that turn out to be somewhat fun to play.

And now I can run around saying I've completed NotGTAV :p

Plants vs Zombies - Done!!

Oh my god, I've actually completed a game this year and it's only January 4th!
I was convinced I'd finished this game years ago, but apparently, I hadn't seeing I couldn't even remember the bossbattle, or the roof, or the videoclip at the end...

So, ye, Plants vs Zombies... The concept sounds lame but it actually is quite fun.

You own a house and zombies are trying to invade your house. By planting different kinds of plant with different abilities, the goal is to kill the zombies before they can enter your house, which, in the later levels, is a bit harder as it sounds.

To keep the variety coming there are all kinds of zombies, like a Zombie Bobsled team, or a disco zombie with a group of dancers.

There are also several kinds of plants to counter them, like a flesh eating plant, exploding plants,. catapult plants...

Besides the story mode, the game of the year edition at least also has several kinds of puzzles and an endless mode.

I'll definately be visiting this game again, someday, because it made me remember how much I like this game. :)
